Atlantis Deepwater Technology Holding AS is an
offshore technology company located in Grimstad,
Norway. Atlantis represents a novel method for
exploration drilling and field development in
deep and ultra deep waters, and may contribute
to considerable cost savings to the oil companies
operating in deep-water areas.
The basic principle of the concept is to use
an artificial buoyant seabed for installation
of subsea systems. The artificial buoy, which
is installed at a “shallow” depth
of approximately 200-300 meters below sea surface,
replaces the functions of the real seabed thus
no equipment remains on the seabed. A tieback
of the first casing in the well is used as anchoring
for this “new seabed”.
In October 2001 the concept was included in the
Norwegian technology program "Demo 2000"
(organized under the Oil & Energy Department),
which was the breakthrough for the technology. The Atlantis Demo project,
which includes fabrication and testing of a full-scale
prototype unit, was funded by the Demo program,
BP, Shell and Atlantis Deepwater Technology.
Atlantis Deepwater Technology Holding and China
Oilfield Services Limited have entered into an
agreement for use of the Atlantis deepwater technology
in upcoming deepwater exploration activities in
China and other South-East Asia Pacific countries,
including Australia. Under the terms of the agreement,
China Oilfield Services Limited and Atlantis Deepwater
Technology will complete the construction and
commissioning of the first fully operational Atlantis
unit for offshore applications. |
